Kate Seredy

Kate Seredy was born and brought up in Hungary. Her father was a high school teacher in Budapest, very much interested in art, and young Kate began to draw as soon as she went to school.  After high school, she went to the Academy of Art in Budapest. In summer vacations she studied in France, Italy, and Germany.

After being a nurse during World War I, Miss Seredy went to America and settled in a small town in lower New York State.  She illustrated and wrote many books for children, including those set in Hungary like The Good Master, and The Singing Tree (both Newbery Honor Books), and those set in other places, including the United States. In 1938 she won the Newbery Medal for The White Stag.

Miss Seredy loved animals, especially dogs and cats. Her many hobbies included woodcarving, sculpture, making pottery, painting children’s portraits, designing and sewing.  She died in 1975.

She is author of the book Philomena.
